Machine Shop Safety – Is your metal lathe guarded?

May 22, 2009 | Machine Guarding

While performing simulated OSHA inspections for clients, I commonly observe inadequate guarding in metal fab/machine shops: lack of guarding on drill presses, shears, etc. An additional area is failure to guard chucks on metal lathes. An employees’ clothing or body can potentially be pulled into the rotating lathe. Click on the link below for information on a fatality caused by lack of lathe guarding:

Please remember OSHA considers the employer ultimately responsible for the proper guarding of machinery. If you have equipment not properly guarded it is your responsibility to modify the equipment to ensure it is safe for use.
