The New York City Fire Department is replacing new fire-retardant gloves after determining they do not properly protect firefighters from burns. Since November 2010, six firefighters have suffered second degree burns on the back of their hands after fighting house fires. The fire department bought the gloves in September after performing an evaluation. In addition, the gloves met NFPA standards. However, after the injuries, an independent outside expert determined the manufacturer had changed one of the materials used in the gloves. The change – from cotton to a polyester blend – made the gloves noncompliant with national safety standards according to Chief of Department Edward S. Kilduf.
